Tidbits of Information
Regarding Flying in the
Phoenix Metro Area

* BACK TO - LOCAL FLYING INFO *

Last Update:  January 25, 2010

State Land Permit -  We do not have a current State Land Permit for recreational pilots- Sally is working on an application that will include a now required dust abatement plan.  For a group bigger than 20 we have to go with the Special Land Use Permit application.  Also talking to legislators to see what other options we have, but it is really slow because the budget is the big priority now.  Individual permits allow only certain uses and a state employee clarified ballooning is NOT one of them.

14th Street Access at Carefree Highway -  Access at 14th Street south of the Carefree Highway is now cut off because the City of Phoenix bought the land for their preserve and shut it off.  City staff will cite you.

Chandler Flying -  Many members have been flying from Tumbleweed Park in Chandler.  Chandler Tower must be contacted prior to launch, but if someone lacks an aircraft radio you can ask another pilot to call the tower or call the tower phone number.  One pilot can advise the tower that there will be more than one balloon taking off.

Tucson -  We have a standing invitation to join the Tucson Balloon Club to fly their area.  Check back here for a contact number for launch sites and Red Zones.
